BOTOX

Botox is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.
It's been used in medicine for the last 20 years for treating strabismus (squint/cross eyes), cerebral palsy - to release muscle contracture, among other uses.

Botox Cosmetic has been approved for medical use for over 20 years. Approved in Canada since 1990 and approved for cosmetic use in April 2001.It is now the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedure used for treating skin lines(wrinkles). Get a more youthful, refreshed appearance, quickly.

Botox works by temporarily inhibiting the functioning of the muscle underlying the treated area. By doing this, a person cannot contract the muscle and hence cannot crease the overlying skin, which causes 'wrinkles'.

Over time the muscle that has been treated recovers from this inhibition and hence you will require repeat treatments. Initially, you may need treatment 3-4 months apart for about a year. We find that the treatments need to be spaced further apart thereafter

  • Using a fine needle leads to near painless injections.
  • Ice is used to further minimize any pain that may be experienced.
  • Bruising is minimal, if any. The most common area to have a small bruise is the area around the eye where 'Crow's feet' are injected.
  • You may experience a headache that is usually very mild. It most commonly does not require analgesia. If you feel you require something for pain, you may take Tylenol or Advil.
  • You may also feel a mild tingling sensation in the areas injected within the first 1-3 days. This is normal and expected.
For the Botox to disperse well into the muscle injected, try to make facial movements like frowning and squinting a few times each hour for 3-4 hours.
  • You will begin to notice the effect within 2-4 days.
  • Maximal effect and result will be seen by day 14.

As with all medication, not everyone responds in the same way.
